The Last Hand, and thirteen gods who all say they didn't

A new work for The Living Gallery. Thirteen gods at one long table, two matching kings on the cloth, and a phone that reads it like a magnifying glass. Hold it to a face, and that god tells you their side.

New in the shopSmart AR

Thirteen gods sat down to one last hand of cards. When it was over, two kings of the same suit lay on the cloth. Somebody cheated, and nobody will say who.

The Last Hand is new in The Living Gallery. The gods sit along one long table, each of them a playing card: Zeus is the King of Spades, Apollo the King of Hearts, Persephone the Queen of Spades, Hades the Jack of Spades.

Question the table. In MINIESE AR your phone becomes a magnifying glass. Hold it over a figure, and that god speaks, with their own voice and their own version of the night.

  • Ares, the King of Clubs: “Don’t look at me first.”
  • Eris: “Of course you suspect me first.”
  • Zeus: “Do you think I would shame myself like this?”
  • Dionysus: “Yes, the wine was mine.”

Thirteen of them, and every account leaves something out. Listen to all of them, and decide for yourself who moved the second king. Its Smart AR costs nothing extra.

Two sizes.

  • 12 × 6, framed, $99. Ready to hang.
  • 40 × 20, $299. The whole table at a size you can walk along. No mat and no frame: it is shipped rolled in a tube.

Under Smart AR on the work’s page, a short film takes the magnifying glass round the table. There you hear each god’s first line; in MINIESE AR each of them goes on, and tells you the whole of their account.
