Good dogs (and one cat)
For the animal lover: the dogs hiding in the collection — some you have to look for, some that only appear in AR.
Painters have always loved a dog in the corner. Once you start looking, they’re everywhere.
Walking the Cloud — a man walks a cloud on a string across an empty field. In AR, the cloud becomes a white dog on a leash, and he walks it home.
The Artist’s Garden at Vétheuil — Monet’s sunflower path up to the family house, a child standing on it. In AR, a white dog trots down the path and the boy comes down to play with it.
The Arnolfini Portrait — the most famous little terrier in art stands at the couple’s feet, and runs about in AR.
Approaching Thunder Storm — a small white dog keeps a man company as the sky darkens; in AR it trots over to sit by him.
Reflections on the Thames, Westminster — a golden dog stands beside a woman at the river wall, under the gaslight.
Meal Break at a Shipyard on the Maas — a small black-and-white dog trots in front of a family sharing lunch.
And the cat. In Hiroshige’s Asakusa Ricefields and Torinomachi Festival, a white cat sits on the windowsill looking out — and in AR it swats at the birds, then paws the towel off the sill.
