Love letters
For an anniversary, a proposal or no reason at all: the collection's great love stories, and the letters inside them.
Some of the collection’s best stories are love stories — and a surprising number of them turn on a letter.
The Kiss — the most famous kiss in painting, in real gold leaf.
The Love Letter (Vermeer) — a letter arrives, and in AR she reads it; the seascape on the wall behind was a Dutch emblem of love.
The Love Letter (Spitzweg) — a secret letter, handed over the garden wall. In AR the young man lowers it down to her.
The Intercepted Love Letter — another letter, lowered on a string toward a girl’s window. In AR it swings past her while the student waves.
The Birth of Venus — Venus, goddess of love, born from the sea amid falling roses.
Confessions of a Typewriter — our own. Its story A Secret Letter turns the typewriter into a proposal, complete with a rose and a ring.
