Eleven new stories, and a card table that never plays the same game twice

Three playing cards sit down to a quiet game. They never quite manage to play cards. Anything But Cards now has nine new stories, and it has become a Smart AR work: each time you point your phone at it, the table deals a different one.

The work’s own story and New Game come free. In New Game, a Joker arrives with a briefcase and the evening changes course. The other nine come in three packs of three, and every pack you add joins the deal.

Pack I. In Pick a Cup, the table turns into a shell game, three cups shuffled under the Queen’s nose. In Static Cling, an ace sticks to whoever touches it and will not let go. In The Longest Turn, the Queen takes so long to play that the King yawns, nods off, and folds flat off his chair.

Pack II. In The chips, the pot piles higher and higher in the middle of the table, and then, in a blink, every chip is gone. In One Shot, the card table becomes a pool table and someone has one shot to make it count. In Bless You, a house of cards rises higher and higher, until somebody sneezes.

Pack III. In Critical Burn, the game becomes a battle on a board, and it gets out of hand: there is fire, and there is a fire extinguisher. In Puck Luck, it’s air hockey. In A Civil Game, chess, and the cards lean in very close.

Drifting Awake has a new story too. In The Jellyfish, a jellyfish the size of a room rises out of the dark sea and lights up all around her, and she doesn’t move from the sofa.

A Gentle Goodnight has Light Enough to Dream: the little figure on the window ledge lets go, and floats up into the night.
